Scarlett & Clayton included me in their very bohemian chic wedding at the House Of DIRT Venue (Bishop Arts District, Dallas Tx). To say I was excited is an understatement. I had known the couple since high school, and to see their love blossom and grow to lead them to this very moment is something super special. From getting ready in an airbnb to the epic sparkler exit in the rain, the whole day was MAGIC.
The First Look
I remember sitting in a parking lot with Scarlett for 30+ min waiting in anticipation for Clayton to show up. The first look jitters were intense. The waiting for a moment you’ve planned for months, is intennnnse. The last minute hair checks in the rearview mirror. The “what is taking him so long hahahah” nervous laughs. And the “let’s do the damn thing” determination. First looks are so fun and give me an adrenaline rush!
The Ceremony
I always find myself next to grandma, in the front row, dabbing tears away with her signature handkerchief. You know the one, rimmed with lace and embroidered with wildflowers. Real cute grandma type shit.
Anyways, I always find myself next to her, ready with my camera pointed down the isle. She’ll glance my way and I’ll nod with assurance as her granddaughter makes a grand entrance. And that’s exactly what happened this day. Scarlett walked down on her dad’s arms, and me and grandma shared a moment.
I don’t know why, but I’ve always been drawn to grandmothers. Like, we don’t have to speak to understand each other. Maybe it’s because I’m literally a 65 yr old woman in a 26 yr old body. Nevertheless, these are the moments that pull me towards documenting weddings. It’s amazing to be in a room full of strangers and somehow feel part of the family. Standing front row. Next to grandma. It’s fun and honest work.
The Send Off
The forecast called for rain, and sure enough, it did. But that didn’t stop the celebration! Even as it drizzled, friends and family gathered on the street to light their sparklers and send the couple off.
Sparks lit the night sky, and Scarlett & Clayton ran through the tunnel of light, straight to their getaway car. Which, happened to be Clayton’s jeep. The sneaky bridal party laced the back bumper with cans, and the couple drove away noisily with joy. What a perfect and epic way to end the best day. When I look at these photos, I can re-live the moments and feel it. I hope that you can feel it too. <3
